Movin', but not losin'

It's been a while since I have been on here.  Yeah, guess you can say I took a hiatus.  However, I am back & it's time to get back into the swing of things.  Fall is in the air, well not here in Texas yet, and I'm ready to get back to it.  "It" meaning losing weight.  I've been training for the Metropcs Dallas half marathon in December and then Houston half marathon in January.  So, it's not like I've been sitting on my butt.  It's been fun this training season.  I started with a new training group and love, love, them!  I run 3 days a week and then do my long run on Saturday mornings.  So, my training schedule pretty much stayed the same.  I just gained new friends & an awesome coaching team!
The only problem when I train for a half marathon or marathon is that I gain weight.  I hear it's fairly common.  To counter this problem, I have been working with a nutritionist that specializes in marathon training.  I have, actually, been working with her for a while now.  Like, almost SEVEN years (on & off)!    We recently met via phone conference, since she lives in another state, and revamped my eating plan.  I didn't like the idea at first.  I am one of those that hates change.  But, I gave it the two week trial and viola!  I am not a hungry monster when I come in from my runs, I stay full longer, and AND I am starting to lose weight again.  I am super excited!
You know what else helps me lose weight?  Writing this blog!  I am not sure why, but it does.  It makes me feel good, even though I know there's probably not a soul reading it.  And, I am perfectly happy with that!  Crazy how the mind works, huh??

Running for pennies, nickels, dimes, or whatever comes my way

This morning was a good morning.  As I ran around my regular four mile loop, in the wee morning hours, I saw something on the ground.  It had a shimmer thanks to the street light above.  As I got closer, I slowed my run down to pick it up.  Too my surprise, it was a quarter!  I don't find quarters too often.  I smiled and put it in my fuel belt, finishing my run, looking for more of course.

I find pennies most of the time.  But, I feel extra special when I rescue a nickel, dime or quarter off the street. It doesn't matter what type of coin it is, I pick it up.  Sometimes I put store in my fuel belt, like this morning.  Sometimes, if I find two pennies, I will put one in each hand and kinda hold it with my finger tips or fidget with it while I run.  It gives my hands something to do.

I'm getting pretty good at finding money in the wee morning hours, under street lamps.  After nine years of running, I should be.  But, sometimes you get those shimmers, and reflections and you bend over to pick it up, thinking it's some sort of coin, and DAMN it's stuck to the road and NOT a coin!  Oh well.  There will be weeks that I can go running, on my same route, and NEVER find a coin.  Then, like this week, BAM!  I found a penny on Tuesday's run and a quarter on this morning's run.

I feel like I'm rescuing the "unwanted" coins off the street.  It brings a smile to my face each time I find a coin during my runs or out on a walk.  And, it does the same for Ms. B, my toddler, who gets to add it to her piggy bank when I get home.

I think the most I have ever found was $1.00 in coins on one run.  I thought I hit the jack pot!  My sister-in-law found a $20 bill while running once.  So, just remember, while you're out there hitting the pavement working out - keep a look out for some money on the ground.  You never know when you'll leave your house to exercise around the neighborhood and come back a little richer!

I Made It...thru May!

I had some goals for May that I wanted to meet.  I met some of them, but not all.  Here's an overview of my May challenge.

1.  My Net Diary (www.mynetdiary.com) is one of the easiest mobile apps that is out there.  I don't like how some of the foods that I eat are not in the list already, but they are easy to add.  When in doubt about calories of something I eat, I just "google" it and use the generic nutrition data of whatever it is that I am "googling".
I have met this challenge for the month of May & am VERY proud of myself!  Food Journalling is not something that I have always stuck with, in the form of a pen & paper.  But, now with the high technology of linking the mobile apps with the computer apps, I seem to have my food journal down.

2.  Another challenge was to "cut back on carbs".  I've been able to do this fairly easy.  If I order a sandwich out, I'll eat half the bun.  You'll be surprised with how many calories you are saving!  I, also, cut back on my carbs at lunch (bring my lunch to work now) and at home.  I've added salad night, one night a week and then, the other nights I just take 1/2 of the carbs I usually eat (i.e. potatoes, whole wheat noodles, etc.).

3.  A big one for me....take my lunch to work more.  Yep, I L-O-V-E to eat out.  I use lunch as my outlet to do this.  I have done a total about face & have started bringing my lunch just about every day now.  There are times where I get a phone call to go have lunch, so those are usually the days I eat out.  However, those phone calls don't come very often!  By bringing my lunch, I am in control of my carbs, calories, fat, sodium, etc.... which could only lead to benefits in the weight loss department!

4.  The gym.  Oh, the gym.  I'm going, but missing one day a week.  Not because I want to.  It's because I have a toddler that keeps getting up in the middle of the night like she did when she was an infant!  I'm hoping this will pass soon.  I can't function off of 5 hrs. a sleep each night.  I'm one to need atleast 8 hours of sleep a night.  I'll have to say, this one is still a work in progress.  I do run in the evenings on the days that I don't make it to the gym.  However, I NEED that weight training.

All-in-all, I am very proud of myself with my May challenge. I lost a total of four (4) pounds in the month of May.  Can I hear a big "OH YEAH!"??!!  I know I'm posting this now, but as of June 2nd, I weighed in at 162.8lbs.  I'm smiling.  :)

I look forward to setting a few goals for June, even though we are a week into the month.  It's never too late to set goals & get started.

May challenge

Well, here it is May 2nd and I'm finally blogging about my challenge for this month.  Here's a couple of things I am going to strive to achieve in May:

1.  Record all my food entries in My Net Diary
I have FINALLY found something that is fairly easy to use!  My Net Diary is an awesome tool.  I have
an Iphone and use the My Net Diary PRO ($3.99 on Itunes) app.  I enter my food on my phone
and when I get home, and log into my computer, all of my entries are there.  No need to do double
entries.  Yea!  Another awesome function it has, is the barcode scanner and recipe button.  I made a
recipe the other night & literally scanned EVERYTHING that went into the recipe, using the barcode
scanner, and created my nutritional value of the recipe.  Oh yeah, and had fun doing it.

2.  With the exception of my Friday personal training session, I've laid off working out at the gym for a little
while now.  It's time to get back to it.  So, I'm headed back to the gym M-F.  Watch out here I come!

3.  Cut back on carbs during lunch and dinner.  I eat WAY too much of it.

These are my top three things, I'd like to achieve in May.

Of course, I have some smaller ones too.  Like, bring my lunch to work more often than not;  switch up my breakfast on the weekend (vs. weekday);  and try new things (whether it be a new fruit, new veggie, tofu recipe.  Wait, did I just say "tofu" recipe?? WOW!  Well, ANY new recipe for that matter.

And, after all this, I hope to see a drop on the scale at the end of the month.

Do you make challenges for yourself?  What are some of your challenges?

The scale is my friend

For some, the scale is a monster.  For me, it is my friend.  I use it to help me adjust my eating through out the week.  Yeah, sometimes I don't like what it has to say to me.  But, I have to have my scale readings each morning.

I had a feeling when I stepped on the scale at the beginning of this week, that I had consumed too many carbs.  Well, 167.6 tells me my feelings were correct!  Needless to say, this week, I have cut back on the carbs.  I weighed again this morning & my weight is down to 166.4.  It's a great day when I get up & the scale has gone down!  I fluctuate so much, it drives my nuts.  I can't find a consistent eating pattern that helps budge the bulge.

I'm thinking of creating a challenge for myself.  Thinking.....maybe, just maybe, this will help me be consistent with my eating.  You have to have a little challenge in your life, right?  May will kick off my challenge month.  Now, I have to think of what my challenge will be.  Should it be weekly?  monthly?  I'll figure it out.  I still have a couple of days.

I have my 10k (Conn's Green 6.2) this Saturday.  Can I just say, I am totally NOT prepared!  My running partner has been out, having a baby.  Yeah, I would say that would be important.  So, I have slacked off in the running dept.   Wish me luck!

Sweet mother

I swore off sweets of ANY kind around me or our house at the beginning of the week.  I'm now down 1.4 lbs.   I have been drinking lots of water, quit diet coke's cold turkey.  I thought this would be the best way to do it because if I have a drink or a sip, I'm just going to want more.  I surprised myself too by quitting cold turkey.  I have not had any temptations to drink one.

Kinda the same with the sweets.  I have decided that I just can't eat the stuff or I just keep going back for more.  I have replaced my sweets with no more than three (3) fruits/day.  This, too, seems to be working.  I have had no sugar cravings.  Yep, none at all.  So, I'm hoping to keep this up.  You know, they say it takes two weeks to make a habit stick.  Let's cross our fingers.

I am doing a 28 day bootcamp for my exercise.  It's a mixture of strength training, basically using your own body weight, and cardio.  I had been lifting weights for about 9 months, so I was ready for a change.  I think my body was too.  As for my cardio, I'm still running.  I have my 10k (Conn's Green 6.2) coming up at the end of this month, so I have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Rant about sweets & the holidays

Have you ever noticed that each holiday is tied to something sweet?  October...candy, candy & more candy;  Thanksgiving...pies;  Christmas....cookies, candy, pies;  Valentine's Day....chocolate;  Easter....more chocolate.  When does the cycle end??  I'm one of those people who can't stay away from the chocolate, cakes, pies, etc.  If it has sugar in it, I can smell it from a mile away!  I tend to not buy chocolate around Valentine's or Easter.  However, it sure is tempting when the toddler brings it home from school!

I have downed a bag of those Peepsters in a couple of weeks.  week. Nice, right??  This is my weakness!  If I could just push the chocolate out of my life, I would be a happier person.  Well, maybe.

For me, it's like starting all over with the New Year's resolution with each holiday that passes.  Is it like that for you too?  Please tell me I'm not the ONLY one that goes through this!  So, I have started my New Year's resolution again & there is to be NO sweets of ANY kind in our house.  I've come out of my chocolate coma & I want to stay out of it!

Welcome to my blog!

Thanks for stopping by!   I'm a busy working mom, wife, etc....  so, I may not post every day.  But, I hope you will continue to check in with me from time to time.

A little more about me:
Marathons & Half Marathons
I've walked (yes, that was walked you read) four (4) marathons.  I've ran numerous half marathons.  In fact, too many to count.  I'm not the fastest runner.  Heck, I don't even consider myself a middle of the pack runner.  Just an average joe runner trying to stay in shape!  I run about a 13 min/mile.  I run 2 days a week on my own & then, on Saturdays with a running club.  I'm currently getting ready for a 10k in late April.

Eating:
WOW, where do I begin??  I love to eat!  I guess that's where my love for running comes in....to kinda balance it all out.  I try to be a healthy eater, most of the time.  However, I have a downfall for sweets.

Weight:
When you think of a "runner", you imagine them being skinny.  Well, I'm far from it.  Yeah, gotta get that pic up soon, so you can see.  After I  had my baby, I lost all my pregnancy weight plus some.  Only to gain the plus some PLUS ten back.  Whew.  Yes, I'm still trying to lose it.  My starting weight with this blog is 166.2.  There, I said it.  It's out there for the whole cyber world to read. My goal before my next half marathon (sometime in the future) will be to lose 30 pounds.  I know that if I can lose the weight, then I my running will speed up.

My blog is Eat, Run and Repeat.  I'm feeling there's going to be a whole lot of other things goin' on here in the future!  Hope everyone has a great weekend!
